The archipelago of the Maldive islands stretches out in the middle of the Indian Ocean for 764 km and is 128 km at its widest point. The most northerly atoll is 595 km from the nearest Indian coastline.
There are over 2,000 islands (1,190 main islands), divided into 26 atolls, that cover 100,00 km² of ocean; there is only 294 km² of land above sea level.
Moofushi is situated in the western part of the Ari atoll near the channel where the sea enters the lagoon.
The island is around 65 nautical miles from the capital Male and to reach it by seaplane takes 25 minutes from the airport.
