THE RESORT

Moofushi is a four star Maldivian resort, with 62 rooms consisting of 45 bungalows on the beach and 17 water bungalows. The management is Italian and it has been in the same hands since it opened in July 1990. The architectural style of the buildings is simple and typically Maldivian, fully respecting the surrounding natural environment. The island is very small: it takes less than ten minutes walking along the beach to cover the perimeter of the entire island.

The staff consists of a perfectly integrated international community. Besides Maldivians of course, there are staff from Sri Lanka , Bangladesh , India , Indonesia and obviously Italy working on the island. The total number of staff is around 120, which means that when the resort is full there is a staff/guest ratio of almost 1:1. The manager is Italian.

History

Moofushi in Maldivian means "the island of roots". The name was given by the local communities thanks to the pandanus and mangroves with developed aerial roots. Moofushi is situated in the Ari atoll, around 65 nautical miles from the capital Male.

It used to be an uninhabited island. Fishermen who came from islands further away to fish in this part of the ocean occasionally used it as a place to rest. Tuna fish used to be boiled in the kitchen where the scuba centre now stands, and was then dried out in the before being taken to the local market in Male. There were small coral houses and a mosque for those who stayed on the island.

In 1989, after permission from the government, construction began on the first rooms in the resort by a Maldivian construction company.

The island was opened to tourists in July 1990.
